The Road To Anhedonia

(First-take recording of a song I wrote a couple months ago.  Lyrics after the jump.)

On the road to Anhedonia
An apathetic thoroughfare
Didn't stop to smell the roses
Lacked the energy to care
All my passion was exhausted
Out the tailpipe of my car
And my will to keep on going
Could only push me on so far

On the road to Anhedonia
My chassis creaks with pain
And the spark plugs just aren't sparking
In the engine of my brain
Though my turn signals are working
No off ramps are in sight
Though my hands are on the wheel
I couldn't turn it if I tried

My hazard lights are flashing
My distributor cap's gone
My tires are all leaking
The 'Check Engine' light is on
My tank is almost empty
I'm running out of breath
Down the road to Anhedonia
Just coasting on what's left

On the road to Anhedonia
The colors are all gray
And signposts only point out things
I'll pass along the way
The gearshift's stuck in neutral
The transmission won't reverse
And the seat belt holds me tighter
As the trip keeps getting worse

On the road to Anhedonia
And I don't like it much
Not a thing to be accomplished
By letting out the clutch
The rear view mirror only shows
The things I've left behind
And I just go on driving
As the pistons start to grind

My hazard lights are flashing
My distributor cap's gone
My tires are all leaking
The 'Check Engine' light is on
My tank is almost empty
I'm running out of breath
Down the road to Anhedonia
Just coasting on what's left

The road to Anhedonia
Is all valleys, and no peaks
My joy and hope escaped me
Like a radiator leak
And all the things I used to like
And used to do to please
Left behind on dirty pavement
Bleeding out like antifreeze

On the road to Anhedonia
The dreams are buried deep
Under asphalt smoothed by lethargy
And failure eased by sleep
The odometer keeps turning
Though it may be quite a while
Before it understands there's no point
Measuring the miles

My hazard lights are flashing
My distributor cap's gone
My tires are all leaking
The 'Check Engine' light is on
My tank is almost empty
I'm running out of breath
Down the road to Anhedonia
Just coasting on what's left
Down the road to Anhedonia
Just coasting on what's left

On the road to Anhedonia
The future's comin' fast
To lives built on avoidance
And on things that cannot last
On practices we can't sustain
And values we can't find
At speeds that we cannot maintain
As we're driving blind.
